Appointment In Velankanni

comic book

Overview

Under my pseudonym, I completed this book that's been entirely hand-drawn, outlined, and filled with color. It's created adhering to the A5 dimension standards. Conceived during my third semester, this comic delivers a novel interpretation of 'Appointment with the Samurai'. The educational directive, to reinterpret the story through our unique methodologies, has resulted in this version, which is entirely my creation.

This is the front page of the graphic novel portraying death personified, beckoning another individual. I created it initially with pencil before moving onto ink. I decided to depict death as a female character in order to add a greater depth to the narrative. The tale in its entirety is predominantly focused on women.

  • PROCESS

The approach I took to designing this comic book began with the assignment to adapt the narrative in my own way. So my process kicked off with constructing storyboards. After storyboarding, I proceeded with the layout of the comic which helped in deciding the subsequent steps. Having mapped everything out broadly, rough sketches of my characters were the next step in the sequence.

My aim was to shape the personas utilizing influences from Indian and Manga styles, an essential aspect of my journey for this endeavor. My pleasing pursuit required extensive research and scrutiny on manga figures. I was similarly passionate in portraying all the female characters as empowered beings.

Initially, I drafted my work on A5 sheets with a pencil, redoing pencil sketches on a different paper later, before bringing them to life with ink. The inking part was considerably genuine and satisfying, involving a tangible paper touch. This marked my maiden attempt at inking.
